FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Member states of the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) reached a landmark agreement on Friday to implement binding requirements aimed at achieving net-zero emissions in international shipping by 2050.
The regulations will apply to all countries that have joined the framework, according to the Ministry of Climate and Environment.
Under the agreement, ships failing to meet the emissions standards will be required to contribute to a fund designed to support cleaner technologies and mitigate impacts on vulnerable nations.
The United States withdrew from the negotiations, warning of countermeasures if fees were imposed on American vessels.
The deal marks a significant step in global efforts to decarbonize the shipping industry, which accounts for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
