FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The share of Italians at risk of poverty or social exclusion increased to 23.1% in 2024, up from 22.8% in 2023, according to the National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT).
This equates to 11 million people, rising to 13.5 million when including those with low work intensity.
Despite a nominal increase in average household income to €37,511 ($40,452) for 2023, real income declined by 1.6% due to inflation.
The most significant drops were observed in northeastern and central Italy.
Severe material and social deprivation affected 4.6% of the population in 2024, nearly unchanged from the previous year, highlighting continued challenges in accessing basic necessities.
