Justice for Cyprus’ Donkeys: A Call to Action

ByFamagusta Gazette

Feb 19, 2025

The recent brutal slaughter of at least 14 donkeys in Karpasia has sent shockwaves through Cyprus and beyond.

These innocent animals, symbols of the island’s rich history and rural charm, were mercilessly gunned down at close range.

Among the victims was a pregnant donkey, killed while in labor—a particularly heart-wrenching detail that underscores the cruelty of this act.

This heinous crime is not just an attack on the donkeys but an affront to the values of compassion and respect for life that we hold dear.

The perpetrators of this atrocity must be brought to justice, and it is imperative that the authorities act swiftly and decisively to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

The Tashkent Nature Park, which oversees the Karpasia Donkeys Management Plan, has described the killers as “nature terrorists” and rightly so. These individuals, armed with hunting rifles and a blatant disregard for life, pose a significant threat to our wildlife and our community. The fact that such psychopathic murderers can obtain hunting licenses is a glaring failure of our regulatory system and must be addressed immediately.

The donkeys of Karpasia are not just animals; they are a part of our cultural heritage and a beloved symbol of our island. To allow their slaughter to go unpunished would be a betrayal of our values and a signal that such cruelty is acceptable.

We must demand that the police and veterinary experts conducting the investigation leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice.

The killers must be identified, prosecuted, and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
