French President Emmanuel Macron is facing growing pressure to resign as the country grapples with a worsening political crisis.
On Tuesday, former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe urged Macron to step down, saying it would be in the best interest of the nation. Philippe’s comments came a day after Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu resigned, the seventh head of government to leave office under Macron’s presidency.
Macron has given Lecornu until Wednesday evening to form a viable governing coalition. If efforts fail, Macron could dissolve the National Assembly and call new elections.
The president, who has been in office since 2017, is confronting what analysts describe as the most serious domestic challenge of his tenure. The political deadlock has raised concerns about the stability of the government and its ability to pass key legislation.
