FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has demanded that Malta remove the word “kant” from its Eurovision song, which means “song” in Maltese.
The EBU’s concern is that “kant” sounds phonetically similar to a vulgar English word for female genitalia.
If Malta does not comply, it will be banned from this year’s competition.
Miriana Conte, who performs the song, uses the word “kant” in the chorus line “I do it all the time / serving kant.”
The EBU’s decision has caused controversy, as the word is an innocent term in Maltese but could be misinterpreted by English-speaking audiences.
Malta now has less than a week to submit a revised version of the song.
