FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Malta’s trade with the United States experienced a dramatic sevenfold decline in the first two months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to data released by the National Statistics Office on Wednesday.
Exports to the U.S. fell to just €23 million ($25.5 million) in January and February 2025, a sharp drop from over €151 million during the same months in 2024.
Imports also decreased significantly, from €40.4 million last year to €16.5 million this year.
In 2024, Malta exported €272.5 million worth of goods to the U.S. and imported €342 million.
However, the introduction of a 20% tariff on European Union imports by U.S. President Donald Trump, which took effect on Wednesday, has cast uncertainty over future trade relations.
The tariffs target a range of EU goods, including those from Malta, and are expected to further strain economic ties between the two nations.
