Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Monday warned that the European Union’s plan to admit Ukraine by 2030 would drag the bloc into war with Russia.
“Dark clouds are gathering over Europe. Brussels is preparing for war with Russia, and they already have a target date for entering the conflict: 2030,” Orban said in a post on X.
He argued that the EU’s rearmament program is designed to make the Union “ready for war by 2030,” coinciding with the target year for Ukraine’s accelerated accession.
Admitting a country already at war, he said, could trigger immediate security obligations under EU treaties.
Orban cautioned that such decisions will shape Europe’s security environment for years, warning that Hungary’s 2026 parliamentary election may be the last in which voters can influence the country’s stance on war and peace.
“If we make the wrong choice in 2026, by the next election in 2030 it will be too late to correct it,” he said, calling for Hungary to maintain what he described as a pro-peace position.
