Nearly three in five Canadians support Canada becoming a full member of the European Union, according to a new Globe and Mail/Nanos poll released Monday.
The survey found 57 percent of respondents either support or somewhat support EU accession, while 32 percent are opposed or somewhat opposed.
Pollster Nik Nanos said the results suggest Canadians are reassessing their global position. He said Canadians still value trade with the United States but also want closer ties with Europe.
The poll showed 84 percent of respondents view stronger economic ties as the most realistic path for Canada‑EU relations.
Roland Paris, a professor of international affairs at the University of Ottawa, told the newspaper that political turmoil in the United States and threats from President Donald Trump to use “economic force” against Canada have made Europe appear more attractive. He said the findings represent “a snapshot of public sentiment.”
The survey comes as uncertainty continues over the future of North America’s trade framework.
