Despite experiencing breathing difficulties on Friday, Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized for two weeks, had a quiet night on Saturday and is now resting, according to the Vatican.
“The night has passed calmly. The Pope is resting,” the Vatican stated in a brief update on Saturday.
This comes after what doctors described as a worrying setback on Friday, following two days of optimistic reports.
The 88-year-old pope experienced an isolated episode of bronchospasm on Friday evening, a condition where the muscles in the bronchial tubes contract.
The Vatican referred to the incident as a “crisis,” noting that it caused him to vomit.
As a result, Pope Francis had to receive mechanical ventilation.
