Qatari firm to build Egypt’s first sustainable aviation fuel plant

A Qatari company will invest in Egypt’s first project to produce sustainable aviation fuel from recycled cooking oil, officials said Monday.

Walid Gamal El‑Din, head of the Suez Canal Economic Zone, said the project by Al‑Mana Group will produce HVO sustainable jet fuel, BioPropane and BioNaphtha. He added that Al‑Mana has signed a long‑term supply contract with Shell to purchase the plant’s entire output, with deliveries expected to begin by the end of 2027.

The facility, to be built in Ain Sokhna, will be developed in three phases. The first stage, valued at $200 million, will have an annual capacity of 200,000 tons and create 300 to 500 direct jobs, plus more than 3,000 indirect jobs.

Al‑Mana CEO Abdulaziz Al‑Mana said capacity will triple within five years to 600,000 tons annually, with cumulative investment exceeding $500 million. Direct employment is expected to reach up to 2,000 jobs, alongside more than 8,000 indirect jobs.

He said the project aims to make Ain Sokhna a regional hub for sustainable aviation fuel exports, with total exports projected at about $15 billion over ten years.
