Cypriot wine lovers this week uncorked a bottle and toasted to a delightful piece of history.

The Cyprus Wine Lovers Association has scored a major win, declaring March 1st as International “Giannoudi” Day—a celebration honoring the unique and cherished red grape variety native to our sunny island.

Giannoudi, a rare red grape, stands out in Cyprus’ rich tapestry of viticulture, which dates back over 6,000 years.

Cypriot wines have been celebrated since antiquity—our island is the birthplace of Commandaria, one of the world’s oldest named wines, renowned for its sweet, rich flavor that captured the hearts of ancient Greeks and medieval knights alike.

Today, the resilient Giannoudi grape is making a triumphant return, thanks to the dedicated efforts of local winemakers.

Its deep red wines, brimming with aromatic richness and a robust structure, are gaining acclaim both locally and internationally.

Notes of red fruits, herbs, and spices characterize this exceptional wine, perfectly complementing traditional Cypriot dishes.

So, as we raise our glasses on International “Giannoudi” Day, let’s celebrate the past, present, and future of Cypriot winemaking—a testament to our island’s enduring legacy and the vibrant flavors that continue to define us.

Cheers to Giannoudi, and here’s to many more delightful vintages to come!
