Roads jam packed to Cyprus’ winter looking mountain range

Police in Cyprus are reporting heavy traffic on the roads to Troodos, both in the Limassol district and on the Limassol-Platra-Troodos and Karvouna-Troodos roads, as well as in the Nicosia district, on the Nicosia-Akaki highway and the Astromeritis-Kakopetria-Amiantos road.
Cyprus is in the grip of a cold spell, and much of the Troodos mountain range is covered with snow.
Forecasters say tonight the region will fall to minus 7 degrees, as reported earlier by the Famagusta Gazette.

Police are urging motorists to drive their vehicles at a safe, low speed, maintain a safe distance from vehicles in front, and comply with the Highway Code and traffic signs.

As of Sunday afternoon, police officers are stationed at various points on the road network to Troodos to regulate traffic and provide assistance where needed.

Though the snow is considerable, it doesn’t surpass the snowfalls Cyprus experienced this week in 1950 when  a blizzard halted rail and air communications, made roads impassable, and caused widespread power cuts.

In Nicosia, the capital, the snow was reported to be 12 inches deep.

This event was part of a larger weather pattern that also brought significant snowfall to Jerusalem and blizzards to Turkey.
