The Sovereign Base Areas Administration has introduced disinfection measures at the Pergamos and Strovilia crossing points after reports of suspected Foot and Mouth disease in the island’s north, officials said Friday.
At the request of Cyprus’ Veterinary Services, the SBAs have set up disinfection facilities and halted the movement of all products of animal origin across the checkpoints.
The administration said the steps are precautionary and aimed at reducing any potential risk while supporting Cypriot authorities. The disease has not been confirmed.
“We are taking swift and responsible action,” said Mark Hartley, head of Customs and Immigration in the SBAs. “We’re working closely with the Republic of Cyprus to keep people safe while maintaining smooth operations at the crossing points.”
