The frequency of earthquakes in the sea area of Anydros, located between Santorini and Amorgos, is decreasing, as observed by two scientific committees: the Permanent Scientific Committee for Seismic Hazard Assessment and Seismic Hazard Reduction and the Permanent Scientific Committee for Monitoring the Greek Volcanic Arc of the OASP.
These committees met on Saturday to discuss the seismic activity in the region, reports Athens Radio.
Despite the decline in earth tremors, it was decided that schools in Thira, Ios, Anafi, and Amorgos will remain closed until Friday, February 28, 2025, as a safety precaution.
The committees emphasized the importance of continued monitoring and precautionary measures to ensure the safety of residents and visitors in the affected areas.
Background
Santorini has been shaken by a series of earthquakes, prompting significant worry among both residents and tourists.
Over 200 seismic events have been recorded, with several registering magnitudes above 4.5 on the Richter scale.
The earthquakes are associated with a fault line between Santorini and Amorgos, an area known for its seismic activity. While recent days have seen a decline in the frequency of quakes, the island remains vigilant due to the risk of landslides and other geological hazards.
Local authorities have implemented safety measures, including school closures and evacuation plans, to ensure the safety of those on the island. Scientists continue to closely monitor the situation, underscoring the importance of preparedness and caution.
