As temperatures drop, electricity consumption is on the rise, leading to short-term power outages in some areas of the Turkish controlled north of Cyprus.
KIB-TEK General Manager Dalman Aydın told BRT, the national radio network, that load transfers were implemented to prevent overloading, which caused these temporary outages.
Aydın reported that a transformer exploded in the Dikmen region due to overload during the day, but teams ‘swiftly intervened to address the situation.’
He emphasized that there is no issue with electricity production.
Dikmen, also known as Dikomo in Greek, is a town located about halfway between Nicosia and Kyrenia, on the southern slopes of the Five Finger mountain range
In his radio interview, Aydın also assured that there is currently sufficient fuel in the institution’s warehouses and that precautionary measures have been taken to ensure continued electricity supply.
The cold weather is part of the Arctic blast named “Coral,” which is gripping Cyprus with temperatures significantly below seasonal norms.
Additionally, the Meteorology Department has issued a warning about the wind blowing from the north and east in western Taurus, which is expected to decrease in force but continue as a stormy wind.
