More than 30 homes have been damaged or destroyed by a bushfire in Tasmania, with authorities warning evacuated residents it is not yet safe to return.
Officials said Sunday night that 19 homes were destroyed and 14 damaged in Dolphin Sands, a small coastal town about 105 kilometers northeast of Hobart.
Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Jeremy Smith said more than 120 assets, including outbuildings, garages and electricity infrastructure, were also damaged.
The Tasmania Fire Service said the blaze was contained by Monday morning, but forecast winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour pose ongoing risks.
Incident Controller Michael Goldsmith said hazardous trees, damaged infrastructure and debris could still cause serious harm.
An updated emergency warning Monday said fire investigation and hazard assessments were underway. Residents who stayed behind were urged to monitor conditions and be ready to act.
Tasmania Police said emergency crews were checking on the welfare of those who remained and ensuring they had supplies.
