The Turkish Cypriot community has donated €120,000 to the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP), boosting its total contributions to €803,000 since 2006, officials said Thursday.
The funds will support the CMP’s ongoing efforts to locate, identify and return the remains of individuals who went missing during past intercommunal violence and conflict on the island. The committee’s work aims to bring closure to families who have endured decades of uncertainty.
Established in 1981 under United Nations auspices, the CMP was formed through an agreement between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. Its operational project — focused on exhumation, identification and repatriation — began in 2006 and is co-funded by the European Union.
To date, the remains of 1,057 missing persons from both communities have been identified and returned to their families for burial. The CMP relies heavily on donor support to carry out its bi-communal humanitarian mission.
