The U.S. Department of Justice has moved to dismiss a criminal case against Boeing, citing a settlement reached with the aircraft manufacturer.
The case stemmed from two crashes involving Boeing 737 Max planes—one in Indonesia in 2018 and another in Ethiopia in 2019—that killed 346 people.
Under the agreement, Boeing will avoid a criminal conviction and pay an additional $444.5 million to a fund that will compensate the victims’ families.
The settlement allows Boeing to resolve legal claims without going to trial. Some victims’ families have criticized the deal, arguing that the company should face harsher consequences.
A judge will review the motion and determine whether to finalize the dismissal.
