FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The United Kingdom has begun testing a vaccine aimed at preventing gonorrhea, incorporating it into an existing meningococcal vaccine, according to health officials.
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has recommended a targeted rollout after studies showed that the MenB vaccine may provide around 40% protection against gonorrhea.
British health officials say the initiative could be a significant step in combating antibiotic-resistant strains of the sexually transmitted disease. Last year, the UK reported more than 85,000 gonorrhea cases, the highest number ever recorded.
The government is reviewing the JCVI’s guidance and considering implementation strategies for high-risk populations.
