FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The British government is extending its ban on personal imports of meat and dairy products to include all EU countries, as foot-and-mouth disease continues to spread across the continent.
Starting Saturday, travelers entering Britain will be prohibited from bringing items such as sandwiches, cheese, cured meats, raw meats, and milk, regardless of packaging or purchase location.
The measure aims to safeguard British livestock, farmers, and food security.
Violators will face confiscation of prohibited items and, in severe cases, fines of up to £5,000.
Earlier restrictions targeted imports from Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria, but the new rules now apply EU-wide.
While foot-and-mouth disease poses no risk to humans, it is a highly contagious viral infection affecting cloven-hoofed animals, with significant economic consequences for farm businesses and international trade
