Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres is deeply alarmed by a reported drone strike that killed at least 30 civilians in Sudan’s South Darfur state, his deputy spokesman said Friday.
The attack occurred Monday about 150 kilometers southwest of Nyala, the state capital, according to spokesman Farhan Haq. Additional civilian casualties were reported the same day in another strike on Kutum in North Darfur.
The United Nations chief condemned all attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, urging all parties to respect obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law.
As the 1,000‑day mark of Sudan’s civil war approaches, Guterres renewed his call for states with influence over the warring sides to press for an immediate halt to the fighting and to stop arms flows fueling the conflict.
He also urged the parties to agree to a cessation of hostilities and resume talks toward a lasting ceasefire and a comprehensive, Sudanese‑owned political process. The UN, Haq said, stands ready to support genuine steps toward peace.
Sudan’s war erupted in April 2023 when the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces attacked government targets. The conflict has since killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
