FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Israeli military strikes are jeopardizing Syria’s fragile political transition and undermining efforts toward peace and stability, Khaled Khiari, assistant secretary-general for political and peacebuilding affairs, told the Security Council last night.
Since the fall of the Assad government in December 2024, hundreds of Israeli airstrikes have been reported across Syria, including in Damascus, Hama, Homs, and Daraa.
On April 3, simultaneous attacks in Daraa resulted in nine civilian casualties, marking one of the most extensive escalations in recent months.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed establishing multiple positions in the Golan Heights area of separation and expressed intentions to remain in Syria “for the foreseeable future.”
Khiari warned that these actions threaten Syria’s opportunity to stabilize after 14 years of conflict.
Jean-Pierre Lacroix, under-secretary-general for peacekeeping, emphasized the importance of adhering to the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement, urging all parties to end unauthorized presence and refrain from actions undermining the ceasefire.
Khiari called for international commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing the need for an inclusive political transition to achieve regional peace and stability.
