FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 57% of participants oppose global tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Among Republican voters, 73% supported the tariffs, while 24% opposed them. In contrast, 88% of Democrats expressed opposition, with only 10% in favor.
Overall, 39% of respondents backed the tariffs, with more than half agreeing with the Trump administration’s stance that other countries have exploited the U.S. in international trade.
Many Republicans also believed that short-term economic challenges would be justified to strengthen the U.S. in the long term.
The survey, conducted over the weekend, included 1,027 participants and had a margin of error of 3%.
Meanwhile, the US president says his government is working to craft tailor-made deals with trading partners after they imposed punitive tariffs.
He said representatives from Japan and South Korea are on their way to the US to try to reach an agreement, Reuters reports.
MARKETS
The Nikkei index in Japan fell 2.6 percent from the opening on Wednesday.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index fell 3.1 percent from the start.
In Shanghai, there was a 1.1 percent drop. The CSI300 index, which covers the largest companies on the two Chinese stock exchanges in Shanghai and Shenzhen, opened with a 1.2 percent decline.
There was also a decline in Taiwan, where the Taiex index fell 1.8 percent in early trading. There, the government announced that it will create a so-called stabilization fund of $ 15 billion to deal with the turmoil in the market.
At the same time, the South Korean won fell to its lowest value against the dollar since 2009, and oil prices also fell.
The US tariff of 104 percent on all imports from China took effect at 7:01 a.m. Cyprus time on Wednesday.
