FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Northern Finland has been hit by a spate of wildfires as scorching temperatures and thunderstorms batter Lapland.
Rescue teams responded to dozens of incidents in just 24 hours, from building blazes to forest infernos.
One of the largest fires erupted near Kemijärvi, covering three hectares. Flames also sparked in Rovaniemi—best known as Santa Claus’s hometown—along with other municipalities across the region.
Helicopters from the Finnish Border Guard and Defense Forces have joined the effort, while fire brigades and volunteers have been deployed from across Lapland.
Officials say resources have so far been adequate, but conditions remain dangerously dry.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute has issued orange-level heat warnings, with temperatures soaring past 30°C in some parts of Lapland.
Wildfire alerts remain active as thunderstorms sweep through the region, igniting already-parched terrain.
Health officials have also raised the alarm over prolonged exposure to extreme heat, warning of risks to the elderly and those with medical conditions. Residents are urged to stay cool, watch out for vulnerable neighbours, and seek medical help at the first sign of trouble.
