FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A 25-year-old Australian national was sentenced to 12 years in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to importing 19 kilograms of cannabis into Cyprus with intent to supply, according to the Larnaca Criminal Court.

The man was arrested on June 4, 2025, at Larnaca International Airport after customs and narcotics officers, acting on intelligence, stopped him for inspection.

Authorities discovered 44 nylon packages containing a total gross weight of 23.15 kilograms of cannabis in his luggage.

Officials said the suspect had arrived from Thailand via the United Arab Emirates.

A scan of his suitcase raised suspicions, which were confirmed during a physical search. The drugs were seized and the man was charged with drug trafficking offenses.
