Figures published on this day in 1957, showed the de facto population of Cyprus at the end of January 1956 was estimated at 532,000, according to an official statistical summary.

During the same month, there were 682 registered live births (358 males and 324 females) and 187 deaths, including infant deaths, compared to 101 deaths in January 1955.

Migration and tourism figures indicated that departures exceeded arrivals by 283.

There were also 75 immigrants and 351 emigrants.

The government employed a total of 7,924 people, up from 5,678 in 1955, with 1,532 being females.

At the end of January, 1,178 individuals were registered for employment at five employment exchanges, with 1,734 vacancies filled, including 370 for women.

In January, 214 private cars were registered and licensed, along with 18 taxis, 18 buses, 60 lorries, 50 motorcycles, and 10 tractors.

Road accidents in 1955 totaled 3,246, up from 3,016 in the previous year, resulting in 123 deaths and 671 serious injuries.
