It was reported this week that 42 new cases of childhood cancer are recorded annually in Cyprus.

Leukemia, lymphoma, and central nervous system tumors are the most common types of cancer in children, based on a statement from the Oncology Nursing Department of the Nurses and Midwives Association.

Additionally, there is an alarming annual increase of 7.6 percent in thyroid cancer among adolescents.

On the occasion of International Childhood Cancer Day (February 15), the association highlighted that Cyprus has one of the highest recovery rates for childhood cancer in Europe, reaching up to 84 percent.

Despite the promising recovery rates, the increasing number of childhood cancer cases and the rise in thyroid cancer among adolescents underscore the need for increased awareness, early detection, and preventive measures.

Experts say the situation calls for a concerted effort to improve healthcare infrastructure, promote early detection, and support research initiatives.
