FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – According to a report by the British newspaper Daily Telegraph, US President Donald Trump is considering a significant shift in American military presence in Europe.
The plan involves withdrawing approximately 35,000 troops currently stationed in Germany and relocating them to Hungary. This move, if confirmed, could have far-reaching implications for US-European relations and NATO dynamics.
Germany currently hosts around 38,000 American soldiers, including those stationed at the Ramstein Air Base. This base is not only the largest US military installation outside American territory but also a critical hub for operations in Europe and beyond.
The White House has neither confirmed nor denied the report. However, a spokesperson for the administration emphasized that the United States retains the flexibility to reposition its military units as deemed necessary to safeguard national interests.
This statement aligns with President Trump’s previous criticisms of NATO allies for not meeting defense spending commitments, which he has argued places an undue burden on the US.
The potential relocation to Hungary, a country with close ties to Russia, could further strain relations between the US and its European allies. It also raises questions about the future of NATO’s strategic posture in the region.
