FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – British High Commissioner Michael Tatham reassured that the UK’s sovereign military bases in Cyprus pose no threat to the island, emphasizing their role in regional security and cooperation.

In an exclusive interview with Politis, titled “Cyprus Not in Danger from British Bases,” Tatham reiterated the UK’s commitment to a bi-regional, bi-communal federation as a flexible framework for resolving the Cyprus issue.

Addressing speculation about the bases’ use in Middle East operations, Tatham dismissed inaccuracies, stating that their role aligns with efforts to de-escalate tensions and support humanitarian initiatives in the region.

He acknowledged local sensitivities regarding the bases but emphasized their contributions to security, economic development, and firefighting cooperation.

Regarding bilateral relations, Tatham described ties between the UK and Cyprus as strong, citing ongoing strategic dialogue and defense collaboration.

He affirmed the UK’s commitment as a guarantor nation in seeking a diplomatic solution to the Cyprus problem and highlighted the productive nature of the 5+1 meeting in Geneva, where parties advanced confidence-building measures and agreed on appointing a UN representative.
