Cyprus: Paphos Fishermen Decry Poor Infrastructure, Declining Industry

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Fishermen in Paphos say inadequate support, poor infrastructure, and strict regulations imposed by the municipality and the Ports Authority are crippling their ability to work.

One major issue is a lack of proper facilities, forcing fishermen to park 500 meters away from their boats—an inconvenience that also leaves their costly nets, valued at €400 each, vulnerable to theft.

The number of active fishermen in Paphos has dropped to around 35, reflecting broader struggles within Cyprus’ fishing industry. Declining fish stocks, infrastructure problems, and a shrinking workforce have driven many away from the trade, with younger generations showing little interest in taking it up.

Local fishermen continue to call for improved policies and better support to sustain the sector.
