France’s Ruling Party Proposes Ban on Children Wearing Hijab in Public

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — French President Emmanuel Macron’s party has introduced a proposal to ban children under 15 from wearing the hijab in public spaces, citing concerns about Islamism’s influence on French society.

The measure, put forward by lawmakers from Macron’s Renaissance party, would also make it illegal for parents to force children to wear the hijab.

Under France’s strict secularism laws, religious symbols—including the hijab, cross, turban, and kippa—are already banned in public schools. The new proposal seeks to extend restrictions to public spaces.

The government is reviewing the proposal amid ongoing debates over religious freedom and secularism in France.
