FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus is tightening penalties on water wastage as the island faces worsening drought conditions. The cabinet has approved plans to impose steeper fines, expected to take effect this summer.
The newly proposed bill will increase regular fines for wasteful water use from €50 to €100, and up to €300 for repeat offenders.
Larnaca authorities were the first to announce their intention to enforce existing legislation, issuing fines for using hoses to wash pavements, roads, terraces, railings, and cars.
The stricter measures come as Cyprus grapples with a prolonged drought, prompting concerns over water shortages.
Officials have warned that conservation efforts are critical to preventing supply disruptions in the coming months.
