FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus has received two helicopters to support wildfire response efforts as part of the defence ministry’s preparations for the summer fire season.
The aircraft were obtained through a leasing agreement with a private contractor, defence ministry spokesman Christos Pieris said Monday.
The temporary lease will be renewed monthly until the government completes its tendering process for new firefighting aircraft.
Cyprus’ fire season typically runs from May to October, with dry conditions and high temperatures increasing wildfire risks.
In 2021, one of the most devastating fires in recent years burned 44.5 square kilometers and killed four people. A separate fire in 2023 scorched 8.8 square kilometers of land near Paramytha, Limassol.
Authorities have prioritized fire prevention, rapid response strategies and aerial firefighting to minimize damage and protect communities.
