FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — At least 975 people were executed in Iran in 2024, according to a report submitted to the UN Human Rights Council on Wednesday.
UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif told the council in Geneva that this figure marks the highest number of executions in the country since 2015.
The report states that more than half of the executions were linked to drug-related offenses, while 43% were for murder. Additionally, 3% were for security offenses and 2% for sexual offenses. At least four executions were carried out in public.
Last week, Iranian authorities executed a man in connection with the mass protests that erupted in September 2022 under the slogan “women, life, and freedom.” He was sentenced to death under the charge of “moharebeh,” or waging war against God, in accordance with Iran’s legal system.
