FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — A heat wave is gripping Cyprus as the Meteorological Service issued a yellow warning for soaring temperatures.
Inland highs are expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius (104°F), with the alert in effect from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. local time.
The stifling heat is the result of a seasonal low-pressure system impacting the region. Skies will remain mostly clear. Winds will start out light and variable at 3 Beaufort, shifting gradually to light to moderate southwesterly to northwesterly winds. Gusts may strengthen to 4–5 Beaufort along the southern coastline by afternoon. Seas will be calm to slightly choppy.
Temperatures will climb to 40°C inland, 32°C on the western coast, around 35°C along other coastal areas, and 29°C in the highlands.
Tonight will remain mostly clear, although light fog and low cloud cover may form along southern and eastern shores in the early morning. Winds will ease to light and variable, and temperatures will dip to 23°C inland, 22°C on the coasts, and 20°C in mountainous regions.
The dry, sunny conditions are forecast to persist through Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with temperatures staying above seasonal averages.
