FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE — Cyprus continues to swelter under extreme heat as temperatures reached 40°C (104°F) in the interior Friday, according to the Meteorological Department.

A seasonal low-pressure system and warm air mass are affecting the region, with mostly clear skies expected after the early morning fog and low cloud cover dissipate. Winds will start light and variable at 3 Beaufort, gradually shifting southwest to northwest at 3 to 4 Beaufort. Stronger gusts of 4 to 5 Beaufort are forecast along the southern coast by afternoon. Seas will remain slightly rough.

Temperatures will peak around 40°C inland, 33°C on eastern and southern coasts, 30°C on the west coast and 32°C in mountainous areas.

Tonight, increased low cloud cover is expected in the west and north, with patchy fog anticipated inland and in southeastern areas. Winds will weaken overnight and seas will remain slightly rough. Temperatures will drop to 21°C inland and on the northern and western coasts, 23°C on southern and eastern shores, and 20°C in the mountains.

The weekend and Monday will remain mostly clear, with localized fog and low cloud cover developing overnight and during early morning hours. Temperatures will remain above average through Monday with no significant changes forecast.
