FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Police are on high alert this weekend through Tuesday, responding to a wave of protest marches and a high-profile football match. The heightened security coincides with commemorations of the Turkish invasion anniversary and the upcoming Champions League qualifier between Paphos FC and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
According to Politis, the police have launched a four-day operation dubbed “Four Days of Fire,” with orders issued to relevant units and a crisis desk activated. Rapid Response and anti-riot teams will be deployed across South Nicosia, particularly along key march routes.
Today, organized youth groups are expected to march from Ledra Street to Ledra Palace. Tomorrow evening brings greater concern, with four simultaneous rallies planned:
- APOEL fans marching from the Greek Embassy to Ledra Palace
- ELAM and DRASİS-KES student groups rallying at Ledra Palace
- OMONIA 29 May supporters (Thira9) marching from Salamina bus terminal to Ledra Street
Meanwhile, security preparations are underway for Tuesday’s Champions League match at Alfamega Stadium in Limassol. Maccabi Tel Aviv will arrive from Israel on Monday, with around 500 fans expected to attend.
