FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Firefighters in Cyprus are battling a raging wildfire that has already destroyed more than 120 square kilometres of countryside.

Strong winds have caused repeated flare-ups across the Limassol district, with emergency services stretched to their limits.

The village of Omodos was evacuated early on Thursday afternoon as flames surged from two fronts. Crews managed to temporarily contain the blaze, but the threat remains. Local leader Eugenios Michael told public broadcaster RIK that efforts are underway to create firebreaks and prevent further spread.

Additional flare-ups have been reported in Arsos, Koilani, Souni-Zanatzia and near Vounaros in Ypsonas. Officials fear the blaze could reach the vital Kouris Dam.

In Koilani, part of the community has already been evacuated. Authorities have now ordered all campsites in the Troodos mountain region to close as a precaution.

Satellite data shows a total of 124 square kilometres of land have been burned so far, with enormous damage to property and the environment.
