FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – In the wake of a fierce wildfire tearing through Limassol, Cyprus has appealed to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for help.
Brussels responded swiftly, dispatching two Canadair firefighting planes from Spain—part of its rescEU fleet.
It’s been a relentless fire season across the region.
Alongside Cyprus, EU aircraft and helicopters have been deployed to Albania, North Macedonia and Syria, with France and Germany sending emergency equipment. Assets from Greece, Italy, Croatia and Hungary have also been called in.
To stay ahead of the flames, 670 firefighters from 14 European nations have been strategically stationed in high-risk zones—Portugal, Spain, Greece, Italy and France—ready to jump into action as the heatwave fuels further blazes.
