FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The deadly wildfire engulfing Cyprus has now claimed lives, with the charred remains of two victims discovered in a vehicle on the Monagri–Alassa road.

Forensic teams will require specialist tests to confirm the identities, but officials believe the bodies belong to an elderly couple who tried to flee the advancing flames.

Based on vehicle registration records, the car belongs to a 77-year-old woman.

According to Cyprus Radio, she and her 84-year-old husband attempted to escape from their holiday home in the village of Monagri but tragically failed to outrun the fire.

Two more people are being treated for severe burns in a specialist unit at Nicosia General Hospital, while dozens have suffered respiratory issues or minor injuries due to smoke inhalation and falling debris.

The fire, driven by unrelenting winds and scorching summer heat, continues to carve a path of destruction across the countryside, forcing evacuations and overwhelming emergency services.
