FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A transformer malfunction in the Karvuna region triggered a prolonged power outage in several mountainous villages of Limassol on Monday evening, local media reported.

The outage was attributed to high temperatures that strained the electrical grid, according to reports from Fileleftheros and other newspapers.

The failure of a transformer in Karvuna led to widespread disruptions.

Despite its age, the Dhekelia Power Plant played a key role in meeting Cyprus’s surging energy demand, the newspaper said.

Wind turbines in the Moni region also helped stabilize the grid, generating an estimated 40 to 45 megawatts of electricity during the outage.

The Cypriot Electricity Authority (AEK) supplied a maximum of 1,040 megawatts to the system Monday, according to the report.

The paper also noted that AEK contributed to alleviating the electricity shortfall in the north of Cyprus, though it did not specify how much power was transferred.
