Greek Member of the European Parliament Nikolas Farantouris called for transparency Monday over the cancellation of the EastMed natural gas pipeline, questioning what geopolitical concessions Greece received in return.
Farantouris said recent energy deals between Israel and Egypt, including a $35 billion agreement to export liquefied natural gas, have sidelined Greece and Cyprus as regional energy hubs.
He warned that delays in defining maritime boundaries between Greece and Cyprus could lead to irreversible strategic losses.
“The time for drawing an exclusive economic zone is now,” Farantouris said. “Otherwise, our strategic encirclement may become permanent.”
He also criticized the U.S. withdrawal of support for EastMed, suggesting Turkish pressure and disputed maritime claims played a role.
