FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE  — Cyprus remains gripped by an intense and prolonged heatwave, with temperatures soaring even in the island’s highest mountain regions.

On Wednesday, the village of Lefkara recorded a staggering 46.1°C, just shy of the national record of 46.2°C set in 2020.

Despite the extreme conditions, the official record still stands at 45.6°C, measured by the Meteorological Department at the Athalassa radiosonde station in August 2010. Other notable highs include 44.6°C on June 14, 2024, also recorded at Athalassa.

The Health Ministry has issued urgent guidance, urging the public to take protective measures against the heat. Vulnerable groups—including infants, young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic conditions—are especially at risk.

Recommended precautions include:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Stay in cool, shaded, or air-conditioned spaces
  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and use hats and sunglasses
  • Drink plenty of water, even if not thirsty
  • Avoid alcohol, sugary drinks, and caffeine
  • Eat light meals rich in fruits and vegetables
  • Limit physical activity during peak heat hours
  • Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles

The ministry also warns of increased food safety risks, advising that perishable items be stored properly and consumed promptly. Citizens experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, or high fever are urged to seek medical attention or call emergency services at 112.

Water Demand Surges Amid Heat

The Water Department has reported a sharp rise in water consumption, with most reservoirs operating below 20% capacity. Authorities are calling on the public to conserve water and avoid unnecessary use, especially through hosepipes for washing streets, sidewalks, vehicles, or outdoor areas—practices strictly prohibited under the Water Conservation Law.
