NICOSIA — Cyprus will prioritize strengthening ties between the European Union and China during its upcoming presidency of the Council of the EU, President Nikos Christodoulides said Friday evening at a reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Nicosia marking the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

In his remarks, Christodoulides praised the “excellent and steadily advancing” relationship between Cyprus and China, citing shared values such as respect for sovereignty and independence, and the resilience of both nations through historical challenges.

He highlighted China’s global achievements in economics, science, and technology, and emphasized the growing momentum in bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, education, and culture.

These partnerships, he said, are creating new opportunities for entrepreneurship and employment, while also building bridges between younger generations.

Tourism continues to flourish, and collaboration in sectors such as shipping, renewable energy, and digital technology shows strong promise. Christodoulides also noted the two countries’ constructive engagement in international forums, including the United Nations.

On the Cyprus issue, the president expressed gratitude for China’s consistent support for the island’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and its principled stance as a permanent member of the UN Security Council in efforts to resume negotiations for a lasting solution.

He reaffirmed Cyprus’s commitment to the One China Policy, calling it a cornerstone of the country’s foreign policy, and voiced support for deeper EU-China relations.

With Cyprus set to assume the EU Council presidency in the coming months, Christodoulides said the country will work to foster dialogue and constructive cooperation, building on recent progress such as the EU-China Joint Climate Statement issued in July.

Chinese Ambassador Liu Yantao described China as a “major independent country with global influence” committed to defending international order. He outlined President Xi Jinping’s Global Governance Initiative, based on five principles: sovereign equality, adherence to international law, multilateralism, a people-centered approach, and practical action.

“China is ready to work with the international community, including Cyprus, to explore ways to improve global governance and build a shared future for humanity,” Liu said.

He noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations and expressed hope that Cyprus’s presidency will help advance the partnership. He also emphasized the strong political trust between Cyprus and China, praising Cyprus’s support for China’s position on Taiwan and reaffirming China’s commitment to supporting Cyprus on its national issue.

Liu announced that the Chinese Embassy and Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation will co-host the China–Cyprus–Europe Media Forum in late October. In 2026, the two countries will celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the fifth anniversary of their strategic partnership.

“We hope the friendship and cooperation between China and Cyprus will reach new heights,” Liu said.
