PORTLAND, Oregon — US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered 200 National Guard troops from Oregon to deploy to Portland, following President Donald Trump’s directive to reinforce security in what he described as a “war-torn” city.
The decision, made Saturday, has sparked controversy. On Sunday, Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield filed a federal lawsuit against Trump, Hegseth, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, accusing the president of overstepping his authority and violating the state’s sovereignty.
The deployment comes amid heightened tensions over federal involvement in local law enforcement and public safety.
