The sea passenger link between Cyprus and Greece cannot continue operating without state subsidy, according to the company running the route.
Managing director Charalambos Manoli estimated that 2027 could be the final year of the sea link, after the goal of making the route commercially viable was not met, owing to reduced demand during the three summer months in which the service operates.
He noted, however, that any new subsidy would also need to take into account the rise in fuel prices.
The Cyprus-Greece passenger link began operating in 2022, following approval from the European Commission and a three-year state subsidy, which was subsequently extended for a further three years.
