Peru’s interim president, Jose Jeri, declared a 30-day state of emergency Tuesday in the capital Lima and the nearby port city of Callao, citing a rise in violent crime, extortion and organized criminal activity.
The measure, approved by the Council of Ministers, will take effect at midnight Wednesday, Jeri said in a brief televised statement.
The country has seen weeks of unrest, including protests led by the so-called “Generation Z” movement, which has rallied against corruption and gang violence.
