A new nationwide survey has mapped the readiness of small and medium‑sized enterprises in Greece to adopt artificial intelligence, highlighting both strong interest and significant challenges.

The AI Readiness Index 2025, conducted by ENTERSOFTONE in partnership with the ELTRUN laboratory at Athens University of Economics and Business, assessed digital preparedness, automation needs and integration of AI into core business functions.

Findings show one in three SMEs is experimenting with AI solutions, but only one in 20 has implemented tools with measurable results. More than 80% see AI as useful in critical operations such as finance, accounting and supply chains. Yet just 5%–6% automate basic processes, and only a small fraction use advanced tools like programming or data analytics.

Data quality remains the biggest hurdle: only four in 10 firms have sufficient data for effective AI applications. Regulatory uncertainty also poses challenges for daily operations.

The survey, conducted between July and September 2025, covered 350 medium‑sized enterprises across Greece, guided by Doukidis and ELTRUN researchers Timoleon Pharmakis and Katerina Fraidaki.
