Hüseyin Amcaoğlu, ‘mayor’ of Gönyeli–Alayköy, said Monday that precautionary steps have been taken against foot‑and‑mouth disease after symptoms were detected in livestock in Boğaziçi (Agios Sergios) village in Turkish controlled northern Cyprus.
Amcaoğlu stressed that no cases have been found within the municipality’s boundaries, but disinfection work is under way at entry points to animal pens in Gönyeli (Kioneli), Alayköy (Gerolakkos), Yılmazköy (Skylloura) and Kanlıköy (Kanli).
He said the aim is to prevent the disease from reaching the area and to protect local producers.
The ‘mayor’ added that the situation is being closely monitored in coordination with the ‘Agriculture and Natural Resources Ministry’ and the ‘Veterinary Department’.
