FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus Civil Defense on Sunday issued a series of safety recommendations as heavy rain, isolated thunderstorms, hail and strong winds were forecast to affect the island from late morning until the evening.

The advisory follows a Meteorological Service warning that the western half of the island would be affected first, with conditions spreading to other areas through the day.

Civil Defense urged the public to clear drains, secure loose objects and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas prone to flooding.

Residents were advised to stay out of basements, avoid crossing flooded roads and keep away from downed power lines and landslide‑prone zones.

The agency also issued guidance for tornado and high‑wind conditions, recommending that people secure outdoor items, stay indoors during strong gusts and avoid coastal activities.

Employers were encouraged to suspend outdoor work where necessary.

Authorities reminded the public that risks may persist even after floodwaters recede and urged residents to wait for official clearance before beginning cleanup or repair work.
